Welsh Terrier

In 1450, a Welsh poet referred specifically to “a good black and red terrier.” The Welsh Terrier is the dog of which he wrote, a basic terrier with a black jacket and tan furnishings. Welsh Terriers were bred to go to ground after otter, badger and other small vermin. They are a sturdy, relatively calm terrier with a steady temperament, weighing about 20 pounds. The Welshman’s coat is dense and wiry to keep him waterproof, with a woolly undercoat for insulation. They are excellent family pets and are usually good with well-behaved children.
